2018 Prayer Retreat: Mepkin Abbey

Saturday, January 13- Monday, January 15

Begin the semester in prayer while learning about Christian community from the brothers of Mepkin Abbey, a Trappist Monastery in Monck's Corner, SC (just North of Charleston).  Essentially, we're trying live as much like monks and nuns for the weekend as possible--praying the hours (a series of prayer services throughout each day), spending time in contemplation, practicing several Spiritual disciplines, and talking to the brothers about their life together.

If you're interested in learning about prayer and/or Christian life together--or beginning the semester with some time away with God--this is the perfect trip for you.

Because of our grant from the Lilly Endowment, there is no cost for the trip!  But, space is limited to 12 participants.

We'll leave Chapel Hill on Saturday morning at 6 AM to make sure we're to the Abbey in plenty of time for noon prayer and lunch, and we will be back to campus on Monday evening, so you have time to finish up any early homework.

**You may have gotten the impression from movies that monks are completely quiet all the time.  Although some are, the brothers at Mepkin Abbey are not completely silent.  The discipline at Mepkin is silence during prayer services and meals.  The rest of the day talking is allowed, but they say "it's not a party atmosphere," but a chance to be contemplative and observant of what God is doing around you--including having the chance to speak with others about what you're experiencing.
